From waste through resource management to exploring circular economy in business

Seminar Zone: The Circular Economy
Seminar time: 14.00 – 14.45
Presenter: Josh Fothergill MIEMA CEnv, Policy Lead: Sustainable Resource Management, IEMA

Seminar description: The vast majority of organisations take control of their waste, managing it in a far more proactive way simply because it makes good business sense. A significant number of the more visionary organisations have moved beyond waste management to apply a much broader and more rewarding approach, one that looks to sustainably manage the materials and resources the business relies upon. They are taking a Circular Economy approach to resource efficiency, effectiveness, security and cycling. However, for those organisations yet to move into this area, the shift to circularity in a linear dominated world is complex and few organisations are truly getting to grips with broad scale application. This presentation will discuss the benefits and approaches of sustainable resource management and consider approaches businesses may already be taking that can be adapted to move towards integrating circular economy concepts into their business.

Presenter Biography: Josh leads IEMA’s research into sustainable resource management and was the author of IEMA’s 2014 From Waste to Resources report, business briefing, maturity analysis tool and webhub. He sits on BSI’s Sustainable Resource Management Committee and is a member of the drafting group for BS8001, which is developing a guide standard to provide a framework for implementing the principles of the circular economy in organizations.
